William Patterson serves as CEO/director of the VA Heartland Network/VISN 15. His interest in high reliability started in 2014 with a campaign entitled “Moving Beyond Performance Measures.” He led his network in just culture and continuous process improvement training and development at that time; he now serves as VA national co-chair for the high reliability organization effort. Prior leadership roles include chief medical officer, VISN 15, and chief of staff, Harry Truman VA Medical Center. Dr. Patterson served on the faculties of the medical schools at University of Missouri and the University of Kansas. He is a retired Army National Guard Colonel, a graduate of the Army War College and a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan.
