Tom Whalen is executive vice president/CMO at Lehigh Valley Health Network. He received his Bachelor of Arts and medical degrees from Boston University in 1973 and 1976, respectively. He entered active duty and general surgery residency at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Va., followed by a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. In 1999, Dr. Whalen completed a master’s degree in medical management at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management of Carnegie Mellon University. He became chairman of the Department of Surgery at LVHN in Allentown, Pa., in 2006 after serving for 17 years at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He became CMO in April 2011.

Dr. Whalen is past president of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery and was elected a regent of the American College of Surgeons in 2003, serving until 2012. He was elected vice chair of the organization in 2010. Dr. Whalen was chair of the ACS’ Residency Review Committee for Surgery from 2008 until 2011. He is a former member of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies and former president of the board of directors of the National Resident Matching Program. He is board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow.
