CEO/Executive Director

National Association for Healthcare Quality

A 20-year healthcare industry veteran, National Association for Healthcare Quality CEO/executive director Stephanie Mercado has dedicated her career to elevating healthcare professions and advancing workforce performance to achieve better health outcomes. She is driven by the conviction that reducing variability in healthcare quality competencies will ultimately reduce variability in care delivery and by a desire to leverage human potential to improve healthcare. At NAHQ, Ms. Mercado spearheaded the development of the industry-standard healthcare quality competency framework, comprising eight dimensions, 29 competencies and 486 specific skills. This framework solves a longstanding challenge: the reality that healthcare quality competencies, though vital to industry success, were developed without the benefit of a defined standard of excellence. Ms. Mercado has served on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s National Steering Committee for Patient Safety and the Association Forum Healthcare Collaborative Steering Committee. She is a board member of the Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Management Education, among other appointments.
