Scott W. Rathgaber is the CEO and a board-certified gastroenterologist at Gundersen Health System. Dr. Rathgaber joined the Gundersen Gastroenterology department in 1998. He accepted his first leadership role in 2005 after being elected Gastroenterology section chief. For the next six years, he led quality, patient satisfaction and other initiatives for the section. In 2010, medical staff across Gundersen elected Dr. Rathgaber to the organization’s Board of Medical Governors, and he served on the Gundersen Board of Trustees. There, he provided oversight and governance of the organization from a systemwide perspective. Two years later, Dr. Rathgaber was named a medical vice president. Partnering with an administrative vice president, he managed the medical side of hospital operations, neurosciences, general surgery, anesthesiology, emergency services, occupational health services and pharmacy. Over time his responsibilities also included leadership in the organization’s quality and learning initiatives.

Dr. Rathgaber has twice been honored as “Educator of the Year” at Gundersen, once for the residency program and once for the physician assistant program. He is a fellow with the American Gastroenterological Association and a member of the American College of Gastroenterology. Before joining Gundersen, Dr. Rathgaber spent five years caring for patients at Burns Clinic in Petoskey, Mich., in the Gastroenterology and Hepatology department.

Dr. Rathgaber holds a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Minnesota followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology at Indiana University. His undergraduate degree is from Wabash College in Indiana. In his free time, Dr. Rathgaber serves on the Viterbo University Board of Trustees and La Crosse Medical Health Science Consortium Board of Directors. He is also a volunteer physician at St. Clare Health Mission in La Crosse, Wis., is active with the La Crosse Community Theatre and is a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Dr. Rathgaber and his wife, Mary, live in La Crosse. They have two children.
