Michael J. Dowling

Michael Dowling has served as president/CEO of Northwell Health since 2002. Previously, he was executive vice president/COO. Before joining Northwell Health in 1995, he was a senior vice president at Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield. He served in New York State government for 12 years, including seven years as state director of health, education and human services and deputy secretary to the governor. He was commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services. Mr. Dowling also was a professor of social policy/assistant dean at the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services and director of the Fordham campus in Westchester County. He serves on many boards, including as chair of the Healthcare Institute and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Mr. Dowling grew up in Limerick, Ireland, and earned his undergraduate degree from University College Cork and his master’s degree from Fordham University. He holds several honorary doctorates.
