James L. Madara is CEO of the American Medical Association. Since Dr. Madara’s arrival in 2011, the AMA has sculpted a visionary long-range strategic plan focusing on three key areas: improving patient outcomes, restructuring medical education to match the evolving needs of our health system, and defining and disseminating the operational characteristics that promote practice satisfaction and sustainability. Dr. Madara also serves as chairman of Health2047 Inc., an independent C-corporation based in San Francisco. Health2047 is a design-driven firm focused on developing innovative solutions to alleviate the current challenges faced by American physicians caring for their patients. Prior to arriving at the AMA, Dr. Madara spent the first 20-plus years of his career at Harvard Medical School, completing his clinical training in pathology and research training in cell biology and physiology, and ultimately serving as professor of pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and as director of the Harvard Digestive Disease Center. After Harvard, Dr. Madara served for five years at Emory University as the William P. Timmie Professor and chairman of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. In 2002, he was appointed dean of the Pritzker School of Medicine and dean of biological sciences, covering both the college and the graduate programs at University of Chicago. In addition to serving as the Thompson Distinguished Service Professor, Dr. Madara was named CEO of the University of Chicago Medical Center and Hospitals. He serves on numerous governing boards.
