David L. Callender joined Memorial Hermann Health System in 2019 as president/CEO. In his role, Dr. Callender is responsible for leading and overseeing the system’s network of more than 300 hospitals, diagnostic and specialty centers, with more than 27,000 employees and 6,700 affiliated physicians. An ear, nose and throat surgeon with expertise in head and neck cancers, Dr. Callender has proven to be a successful healthcare leader over the course of his career, achieving successes in forward-thinking strategic planning, making improvements in delivering high-quality and high-value healthcare, fostering strong leadership development, engaging employees and enabling physician collaboration.
Prior to joining Memorial Hermann, Dr. Callender served as president of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) for 12 years. Other previous roles include associate vice chancellor/CEO of the UCLA Hospital System and executive vice president/COO at MD Anderson. A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Dr. Callender received his medical degree from and completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine. He also completed an oncology fellowship with MD Anderson and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston. Dr. Callender and his wife, Tonya, have three children.
