Monica C. Vargas-Mahar, FACHE
Monica C. Vargas-Mahar is market CEO for the Carondelet Health Network/CEO for St. Joseph’s Hospital, Tucson, Ariz. In this role, she provides strategic and operational leadership for St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, Marana Hospital and St. Raphael Emergency Center. Ms. Vargas-Mahar has more than 20 years of experience in the field of healthcare administration. She joined Tenet Healthcare in 2001 and has served in various leadership roles throughout the organization. She most recently served as CEO at The Hospital of Providence East Campus in El Paso, Texas. During her tenure she has led teams to expand hospital capacity, start new business lines such as bariatric surgery programs, earn Comprehensive Stroke Certification, and advance trauma level status for ER designation, all while improving the patient experience. She is civically active, serving as chair of The National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives and as a board member of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, Texas Lyceum, the Trinity University Healthcare Administration program, and Loretto Academy High School. In 2012, Ms. Vargas-Mahar was named an “Up & Comer” by Modern Healthcare magazine. Ms. Vargas-Mahar earned her master’s degree in healthcare administration from Trinity University in San Antonio and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She is board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow.
