M. Michael Shabot is a founding partner of Relia Healthcare Advisors. He practiced as a general/trauma surgeon and surgical intensivist and later served as executive vice president and system chief clinical officer for the Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, which included 19 hospitals, 20 ambulatory surgical centers, eight convenient care centers and 280 other ambulatory sites. Under his leadership, Memorial Hermann embarked on a journey to high reliability safety and quality. In 2013, Memorial Hermann received the John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality at the National Level, presented by the Joint Commission and National Quality Forum. In 2016, Memorial Hermann’s Sugar Land Hospital received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. And in 2019, Memorial Hermann received the International Hospital Federation’s Dr. Kwang Tae Kim Grand Award, presented to Dr. Shabot at the IHF Congress in Muskat, Oman. Dr. Shabot also served as board chair of Memorial Hermann’s accountable care organization. In 2013, 2014 and 2015, Memorial Hermann’s ACO generated the highest savings the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Medicare Shared Savings Program had ever recorded, totaling $200 million. Prior to Memorial Hermann, Dr. Shabot served as chief of staff, associate director of surgery, director of surgical intensive care units and medical director of information services at Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles.
