David L. Omura, DPT
David L. Omura was appointed medical center director/CEO for the Columbia VA Health Care System on March 19, 2017. He was sworn in as a member of the senior executive service on March 20, 2017. Dr. Omura provides oversight and leadership of a healthcare system that includes a medical center located in Columbia, S.C., and seven community-based outpatient clinics that cover two-thirds of the state of South Carolina. In fiscal year 2022, the Columbia VA Health Care System’s 2,950 staff served more than 88,000 veterans, provided over 1.1 million outpatients visits, and admitted more than 2,400 patients all while operating successfully within its $832 million budget. Prior to Dr. Omura’s appointment to this role, he served as the medical center associate director/COO since September 2012. In that role, he had operational oversight over finance, human resources, engineering, safety, privacy, logistics and the business office. Preceding his roles in executive leadership, Dr. Omura served in clinical and administrative roles both at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System and the University of Florida Health System. Dr. Omura is a New York native, earning his Master of Science degree in physical therapy from Boston University, his master’s degree in healthcare administration from the University of Florida, and his doctorate in physical therapy from MGH Institute of Health Professions. He is actively engaged with stakeholders at the local, state and national levels, serving on the board or as a member of multiple organization, including the American Hospital Association, American Red Cross, South Carolina Hospital Association, ACHE and the Federal Asian Pacific American Council. Dr. Omura is passionate about developing future leaders. Through his commitment to the field’s up-and-coming leaders, he takes on new mentees annually and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of South Carolina.
