The Anomaly Within the Anomaly of Healthcare: Transforming the Encounter-Based Paradigm With Digital Health

About the Session

Healthcare as an industry is an anomaly. With its massive size and professional base, healthcare has endless different cultures, with varying levels of hierarchy, tensions and subcultures. This highly fractionalized environment makes change extremely difficult—and expensive. In the U.S., our profit-building healthcare system makes care delivery even more of an anomaly-based enterprise, one that is responsive but not proactive, one that pays based upon illness but not to improve wellness. Nearly 60% of healthcare spending is devoted to treating people who are already sick—and that spending influences just 10% of health outcomes. U.S. care delivery is based on constantly looking for anomalies in the individual. We identify what normal is, and when we find something abnormal, we seek to identify what is causing it: an anomaly within an anomaly. Once we identify the cause, we attempt to fix it by putting the individual into a care pathway; when something doesn’t fit into a care pathway easily, we explore the issue with further testing to identify and treat the anomaly. This system of care delivery is incredibly inefficient, with most of our anomaly-seeking based upon an encounter-based paradigm: a patient must seek help or help must seek the patient. We must move away from this methodology of tracking health and wellness and shift instead to value-based care, which requires that we know more about patients than we can learn in an appointment. Instead of waiting for sick people to seek treatment, we can engage healthy people to help them stay well. With the accelerated adoption of digital health at both the patient and clinician level, we now have the chance to change our course. But how do we intersect our existing anomaly-based paradigm with the promise of digital transformation for better care? This session will explore the anomaly that is healthcare and how digital health empowers us to transform the encounter-based paradigm into personalized and proactive care delivery.
