About the Session

The presentation will include data indicating that more than 80 percent of all ACOs are too small to succeed under downside risk. The presenters will explain how ACOs with fewer than 100,000 lives can overcome problems of random chance that affect savings. A successful model of nesting multiple, smaller ACOs within a single, collaborative ACO will be described. You also will discover population health management strategies that will allow your organization to beat the benchmarks and produce quality scores above 90 percent. An accountable care leader and a hospital CEO will share their experiences with the shared ACO governance process and successes with scaling up to improve performance. An actuary will present an overview of ACO performance in the Medicare Shared Savings Program to date.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the technical aspects of the collaborative ACO model and how healthcare organizations benefit from participation.
  • Examine the limitations of small-scale ACOs and learn how the collaborative ACO model can be used to scale ACOs to achieve maximum outcomes.
