About the Session
This session will be held at the Swissôtel Chicago; includes a 15-minute break.
As healthcare organizations strive to adapt, survive and prosper in a continually changing marketplace, capitalizing on the strengths of solid, high-quality boards becomes essential. The first portion of this forum will detail governance privileges and common issues faced by boards and CEOs. Topics will include obligations; functions and responsibilities; terms, size and compensation; self-assessments; committees; retreats; governance versus management; meeting frequency; CEO succession plans; conflicts of interest and intermediate sanctions; and characteristics of good versus advanced boards.
The second portion of this forum will incorporate CEO aspects of governance, including relationships between the CEO and his or her board and board chair and the CEO evaluation process. Special emphasis will be made on how to develop and nurture the advisory board. You also will gain a 360-degree perspective on physicians as board members, learn the value that physician board members bring and examine considerations regarding their input into governance. Faculty also will explain the selection process for physician members and review special challenges for physician leaders on boards and examples of exceptional physician board leadership. At the forum’s conclusion, you will understand what you need to move a board’s performance dial from fair to good, good to great or great to exceptional.
