44A – Optimizing Staffing Across 450 EDs: The Science Behind Lean Staffing Optimization and the Art of Implementing Broad-Scale Change

Tuesday, March 24th

About the Session

Although ED patient volumes and acuity levels fluctuate based on time of day, day of the week and sometimes the season of the year, most EDs have the exact same number of physicians, advanced practice clinicians and nurses on duty every day of the week. This common mistake can lead to misalignment of resources that results in inefficiencies such as longer wait times, higher costs due to too many providers on duty or lost revenue when patients leave without treatment. This seminar delves into the art and science of ED staffing optimization. It discusses the need for and impact of optimization and explores the strategy one national physician organization used to optimize staffing at 450 diverse EDs across the country. Achieving such large-scale change comes with challenges, pitfalls and lessons learned. You can use this information to begin evaluating your own ED staffing levels and determine next steps for beginning to align staffing to demand to improve ED performance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the basic concept of Lean ED staffing optimization and compare your organization’s staffing model to one that uses Lean.
  • Understand the approaches, pitfalls and knowledge related to large-scale deployment of innovation.
