About the Session

As healthcare organizations strive to adapt, survive and prosper in a continually changing marketplace, capitalizing on the strengths of high-quality boards becomes essential. This session details governance privileges and common issues faced by boards and CEOs. Topics include obligations; functions and responsibilities; terms, size and compensation; self-assessments; committees; retreats; governance versus management; meeting frequency; CEO succession plans; conflicts of interest and intermediate sanctions; and characteristics of good versus advanced boards. You also will hear about CEO aspects of governance, including relationships between the CEO and his or her board and board chair; the CEO evaluation process; and the role of the advisory board. You will learn the value physician board members bring and examine the selection process for physician members. At the end of this session, you will understand what you need to move a board’s performance dial from fair to good, good to great or great to exceptional.

Seminar 37 will be held at the Palmer House Hilton; includes a 15-minute break.
