About the Session

This session will begin with a review of the current status of physician leadership within the U.S. healthcare system, primarily drawing upon ACHE research reports. It will then introduce the most common physician leader roles—medical director, chief of staff, CMO, physician utilization management adviser and department chair—and how they fit into the most common organizational structures. The presenters also will emphasize why good physician leadership is so important. You will learn methods for exploring physician leadership roles, including the basic skills, knowledge and experience required to be a physician leader. The presenters also will describe career progression for physician leaders and keys to physician leadership success, including temperament and the ability to act as the nexus between patients, administration and providers. Real-life cases will be used to drive home these ideas. This session will conclude with an interactive question-and-answer segment, allowing you to engage with the speakers.
