About the Session

Burnout, resiliency and engagement are hot topics. However, a careful review of the current literature indicates that more than 90 percent of it covers diagnosing and recognizing these entities, but precious little is devoted to prevention and treatment. This session presents a detailed, pragmatic approach to tying treatments to outcomes. The information is based on work with Christina Maslach, whose burnout index scale is one of the most widely recognized diagnostic tools for measuring burnout. This is a practical approach, which relies less on the “words on the walls” than the “happenings in the halls” in that it ties mission, vision and values to daily work in a healthcare system. The session combines framing the issues with interactive audience participation and case studies. Participants will emerge with a toolkit of techniques to put to work in their healthcare systems.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define and describe burnout, rustout, resiliency and engagement and their effects on healthcare.
  • Provide detailed, pragmatic strategies for leaders, managers and individuals to transform their work and workplace.
