In February 2015, multiple messages were sent to hospital executives and executive directors from the Alliance for Performance Excellence, explaining the collaboration initiated among the Baldrige Foundation, the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program and the American Hospital Association. The AHA, a sponsor of the 2015–2016 Baldrige Excellence Framework, sent a memo to its entire membership, championing the use of the framework and the Criteria for Performance Excellence and participation in a Baldrige-based program in order to foster performance excellence in healthcare across the nation. This presentation is designed as a follow-up to that communication. Faculty will share evidence for engaging in a Baldrige journey, with a focus on leadership’s role in creating the conditions for performance excellence and using the strategic planning process to foster organizational alignment, integration and success.
The Baldrige criteria are a set of 200-plus questions designed to help your organization remain on the “leading edge of validated leadership and performance practice, to help executives understand your organization, lead your organization, manage your organization, and improve your organization in a systematic manner.” The framework and criteria are evidence based, with proven results in multiple sectors for over 25 years. Through the process of discussing and answering these questions, receiving feedback and taking action, organizations are able to identify opportunities for improvement, potential blind spots and areas of relative strength, and to achieve performance excellence.
- Compare and contrast the Baldrige Excellence Framework with ISO 9001 in both strategic and business case terms.
- Describe how to use the synergy of the Baldrige and ISO 9001 frameworks for a strategic planning system and to foster organizational alignment.
