About the Session

With a looming physician shortage and an increasing patient population, access to primary care and specialty providers remains a critical concern for healthcare organizations nationwide. To help meet this demand for providers, many organizations are rapidly expanding their number of employed advanced practice providers. However, as this workforce continues to grow, it presents organizations with a new set of challenges and opportunities. Stanford Health Care—an organization that employs 473 APPs—conducted a wellness survey that revealed growing APP dissatisfaction and turnover due to underutilization and lack of role clarity. In response, leadership worked with SullivanCotter consultants to develop a strategy aligned with key organizational goals and objectives including improving patient access and quality; increasing revenues; enhancing provider engagement, and reducing provider burnout. During this presentation, we will explore how Stanford Health Care developed a comprehensive workforce strategy to integrate, optimize and engage this underutilized and almost invisible workforce as key members of the provider team. As organizations expand their APP workforce, the model Stanford developed can serve as a roadmap for the future of APPs and the key role they play in transforming care delivery.

Learning Objectives:

  • Present national trends and data regarding the utilization of APPs and new strategies and structures to support their successful integration and optimization.
  • Describe one organization’s comprehensive APP strategy that quickly resulted in increased patient access and physician and APP productivity and engagement.
