Henry Ford Health/ Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
Dr. Michael Lewis leads with clarity, alignment, and over 30 years of experience across academic medicine and health system leadership. He earned his medical degree from University College London, completed early training in the UK and Israel, and moved to the United States in 1990 to pursue anesthesiology at Albert Einstein Medical Center and Jackson Memorial Hospital.
He joined the University of Miami faculty in 1995 and shaped programs and policy through dual academic and institutional leadership. He directed the residency program, served as Vice Chair of Anesthesiology, and advanced into the role of Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. He also chaired the Medical School Faculty Council and served as Vice Speaker of the University Senate. The Fulbright Commission awarded him two scholarships, and the AAMC selected him for its national leadership program.
In 2013, he accepted the position of Chair of Anesthesiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. While completing the Harvard Chiefs of Clinical Services program, he transitioned to lead the system-based Department of Anesthesiology at Henry Ford Health. Michigan State University then invited him to establish and chair its new Department of Anesthesiology in 2022. He continues to lead both departments, advancing integration, academic alignment, and workforce strategy.
Dr. Lewis directs one of the nation’s few fully integrated academic anesthesia departments. His responsibilities span hospitals, ambulatory centers, and procedural platforms. He manages a substantial operating budget and supports hundreds of physicians, CRNAs, residents, fellows, and staff. He aligns recruitment with enterprise goals, strengthens transparent funds flow, and develops clinical-academic models that scale. He also serves on boards that guide integration, faculty affairs, and medical group governance.
Nationally, he represents Academic Medicine on the Board of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. His peers have elected him President of the Society of Academic Associations of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (SAAAPM), the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Society for the Advancement of Geriatric Anesthesia. He also contributes as a board member for the Society for Education in Anesthesia, the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Henry Ford Medical Group. The Governor of Michigan appointed him to the state’s Board of Medicine. The American Geriatrics Society honored his system-level work with a Hartford Award.
Dr. Lewis leads by building high-performing teams, strengthening culture through strategy, and guiding organizations through complexity. Across every role, he advances institutions that serve with integrity, adapt with vision, and lead with lasting impact.
