Michael Chang, MD, FACS, is the chief physician executive and system chief medical officer for USA Health, where he leads system-wide clinical growth and improvements in quality, patient safety and operational excellence. As a professor of surgery, Dr. Chang also plays an active role in academic leadership and clinical education. Prior to joining USA Health, he spent 24 years at Wake Forest Baptist Health and the Wake Forest School of Medicine, where he served as a trauma surgeon, chief medical officer and chief quality officer for the health system.
Nationally recognized for his expertise in patient safety, quality improvement and surgical education, Dr. Chang has held leadership roles with the American College of Surgeons and its Committee on Trauma, helping shape national standards and quality programs. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and presentations and received multiple teaching honors, including the Career Achievement Award in Surgical Education from Wake Forest. In 2025, he was named to the Becker’s Hospital Review list of “Chief Medical Officers to Know.” Dr. Chang received his bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He completed his residency training in general surgery at UAB and fellowship training in critical care and trauma surgery at Vanderbilt.
