Knitasha Washington is a thought leader, advocate, researcher and performance improvement expert. She has worked with healthcare systems, U.S. government agencies and numerous policymaker groups to ensure that patient-centered and equitable approaches are at the heart of healthcare redesign. Dr. Washington founded and serves as president of ATW Health Solutions, a Chicago-based healthcare advisory and research firm. She is also a board member for the National Quality Forum and the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. Dr. Washington has earned recognition nationally for her work in quality improvement, patient and family engagement, health equity and patient safety. With more than 20 years’ experience in healthcare, serving primarily as a consultant and equity practitioner, Dr. Washington brings a multidimensional talent focused primarily in the areas of systems performance improvement, operations efficiency, hospital turnaround, patient safety, patient and family engagement, quality improvement, and health equity. In 2009, she lost her father to a preventable medical error, an event that dramatically inspired her sense of urgency for quality improvement with an integrated approach to equity and engagement that focuses on eliminating harm for vulnerable populations. Today, Dr. Washington serves in multiple roles, driving change and innovation nationally and locally. She is credited for being a key thought leader on the alignment of equity through her work with the Partnership for Patients Campaign, as a contributor to Safety Across the Board and through development of the Integrated PFE Index Assessment. Dr. Washington has worked as a lead contributor to the work of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Improvement and Innovations Network and Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative. She continues to advocate for greater diversity and minority inclusion in healthcare leadership through her long-standing commitment to work with the National Association of Health Services Executives. She contributes to health services delivery research as principal investigator for projects funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute and CMS. Dr. Washington received her Doctor of Health Administration degree from Central Michigan University, her Master of Heath Administration degree from Governors State University, and her Bachelor of Arts degree, with a focus in business administration, from Chicago State University.
