Chris Van Gorder, FACHE
President / CEO
Scripps Health
As an ACHE fellow, former ACHE chairman (2010), and recipient of the ACHE Gold Medal Award (2014), Chris Van Gorder is recognized as much for his overall contributions to health care and his community, as he is for his 23 years as president and CEO of Scripps Health, San Diego.
Chris’ rise to health care executive was unconventional. His journey began as a hospital patient, when as a police officer he was critically injured during a family dispute call. After a lengthy recovery, he continued his education in health care management and rose to levels of increased responsibility.
Chris received his master’s in public/health services administration at the University of Southern California, completed the Wharton System CEO Program at the University of Pennsylvania and earned his bachelor’s from California State University, Los Angeles.
In his tenure at Scripps, Chris has led a financial and cultural turnaround, successfully expanded the Scripps’ integrated health system, led medical relief missions following Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and served his community as Reserve Assistant Sheriff for San Diego County (retired). His still sought-after book, The Front-Line Leader, has been in print since 2014.
