Ruben J. Azocar, MD, MHCM, FASA, FCCM is the Vice President of Perioperative Services at the Beth Israel Medical Center (BIDMC) – a Harvard Medical School Affiliate- in Boston. Dr. Azocar obtained his medical degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and after completing a surgical internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami, he completed his Anesthesiology residency at Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine (BMC/BUSM) and Critical Care Fellowships at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and at BIDMC. Dr. Azocar completed a master’s degree in healthcare management at Harvard School of Public Health in 2016.
Dr. Azocar has a distinguished career in academic medicine having served as Vice Chair for Education and Program Director BMC/BUSM and as Professor and Chair at Tufts Medical Center/Tufts University.
In his current role, he oversees perioperative services operations, quality, safety and compliance as well as having fiduciary responsibility over the continuum of Perioperative Services.
Dr. Azocar expertise and contributions to the fields of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine have been recognized with prestigious Fellowships by the American College of Critical Care and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Azocar is also a former President of the Massachusetts’s Society of Anesthesiology and remains a delegate for MA to the ASA. His national presence in anesthesiology extends to the American Board of Anesthesiology where he serves as oral board examiner and former question writer and editor for the Critical Care certification exam. He is a frequent national and international conference guest speaker.
