Chief Administrative Operating Officer

Evelyn Sommers has served as the Chief Administrative Operating Officer of VHA Office of Patient Care Services since February 2021. In this capacity, she serves as a business advisor to the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer and supports 16 national program offices with Congressional actions, executive correspondence, communications, finance, and human resources capabilities.
During her 14 years in the Veterans Health Administration, Ms. Sommers has served as a Graduate Healthcare Administrative Training Program Resident, a Health System Specialist in the VHA Office of Nursing Services supporting clinical nursing practice, and an Executive Assistant in the Employee Education System supporting operations. She has served on detail to the VHA Office of Congressional and Legislative Affairs and provided support to VA Medical Centers as a collaborative coach process improvement collaboratives.
Ms. Sommers has a certificate of mastery for Leadership for a Democratic Society - Federal Executive Institute and is an alumna of the Interagency Institute for Health Care Executives, where she contributed to a paper entitled, “Federal health systems’ challenges and criticism in regards to access, quality and cost.” She has served as a contributing author for nursing journal articles and a book chapter. Ms. Sommers has a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Maryland - College Park and a Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration from The George Washington University.
