Covenant High Plains Surgery Centers
Alfonso del Granado, MBA, FACHE, CASC, is the Administrator and CEO of Covenant High Plains Surgery Centers (CHPSC) in Lubbock, Texas. He is double board-certified in healthcare management and ASC administration, and has more than two decades of leadership experience in ASC and practice management, hospital administration, compliance, and corporate development. Alfonso is proud to serve on the Board of Directors of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA) as well as on ASCA’s Education Committee and as a mentor for their ASC Administrator Development Program, helping to develop the next generation of healthcare leaders. He is honored as well to serve on the Board of Directors of the Texas Midwest chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), where he also volunteers on the Leadership Mentoring Network. Alfonso is a regular presenter at Becker’s ASC conferences and at the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA) annual conferences and has more than a hundred published healthcare-related articles, interviews, and media appearances.
Alfonso joined CHPSC just before the COVID shutdown, helping keep the centers open and profitable. In the midst of the pandemic, he guided its bariatric program to “Center of Excellence” recognition as well as earning Blue Cross Blue Distinction, Aetna Institute of Quality, Optum Center of Excellence, and American College of Surgeons ACS Surgical Quality Partner designations. Under his leadership, CHPSC was ranked #1 in West Texas and in the top 5% nationwide in Newsweek’s America’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers, and among the top 2% nationally in Press-Ganey’s patient satisfaction ratings. He also led the development of the first ASC-based robotic joint replacement program in West Texas and the area’s first DaVinci robotic surgery program, as well as overhauling the centers’ management, billing, purchasing, and analytics systems. Alfonso is currently adding another operating room to one center and working on adding 1-3 additional operating rooms at the second center to facilitate further growth.
CHPSC is a joint venture of Covenant Health System, National Cardiovascular Partners, and 40 physician partners, with 70 active surgeons performing 8,000 cases this year in a wide range of specialties. CHPSC’s two centers total 12 ORs and 4 procedure rooms, and offer the latest in bariatrics, dermatology, ENT, general surgery, GI, gynecology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, maxillofacial, pain, plastic & reconstructive surgery, podiatry, and urology to patients from Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.
