Jesse Tamplen is the Executive Administrator of Behavioral Health, Vice President of Continuous Performance Improvement and Patient Care Coordination at John Muir Health, a not-for-profit San Francisco Bay Area health system with three acute care hospitals and significant primary and specialty care ambulatory practices. Jesse's healthcare experience spans over 20 years as a clinician and executive in Academic Medical Centers, Children’s Hospitals, and for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare systems. He has proven leadership skills in quality and financial turnarounds of emergency, hospital, ambulatory and behavioral health services. Jesse presents nationally on continuous improvement, leadership, healthcare operations, and behavioral health. He inspires teams and medical staff to embrace innovation by fostering accountability, psychological safety, cultural humility, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Before his current role at John Muir Health, Jesse spent nine years at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Health and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. His journey in healthcare leadership has been diverse, serving as Vice President of Ancillary and Support Services, Executive Director of Operational Excellence, Administrative Director of Lean and Continuous Improvement, Service Line Director of Children's Mental Health, and Multispecialty Practice Administrator. In each of these roles, Jesse led critical enterprise imperatives, improving access, safety, quality, financial performance, engagement, and design and construction projects. His work in quality improvement and cancer has been recognized and published in peer-reviewed journals. He has also held key Behavioral Health leadership roles at Sutter Health and Telecare Corporation, a national behavioral health company.
Jesse is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a master's degree in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Southern California. He is board-certified in Healthcare Management by the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a past Board Member of the California Association of Healthcare Leaders. He is a committee member of the California Hospital Association’s Behavioral Health Taskforce. In 2023, Jesse was appointed to the American Hospital Association (AHA) Committee on Behavioral Health to advise AHA on advocacy positions, public policy issues, and behavioral health strategies.
Jesse has been awarded the American College of Healthcare Executives, California's Regents Award in leadership, Alameda County's Mental Health Award, University of California, Berkeley Paola Timiras Award for Research in Aging, and was a John A. Hartford Foundation Geriatric Social Work Fellow.
