Diversity & Inclusion
The current, pervasive anti-diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) narrative and the evolving legislative landscape questions the benefits of DEI not only in higher education settings but also in corporate settings. In this session, three executive leaders will answer tough questions while illustrating key elements every executive should be thinking about in navigating the DEI backlash. Grounded in research by Seramount, presenters will delve deeply into five key elements that guided engagement with key stakeholders to implement practical, real-life innovative DEI solutions, in a large integrated multi-state health system with 150,000 teammates.
First, presenters will demystify historical and current factors that drive resistance to DEI efforts, including the fear of losing power, the meritocracy myth and the changing demographics that challenge traditional power structures. They will illustrate how a robust DEI engagement ecosystem fosters spaces of allyship, belonging, acceptance and inclusion by challenging assumptions, building trust and identifying blind spots. Then, key considerations for reframing the DEI narrative by tackling myths around reverse discrimination, countering misinformation in the media, and amplifying the truth around affirmative DEI will be discussed. Attendees will learn how to develop an enterprise point of view, rebrand DEI initiatives by shifting from labels to impact and embedding intersectionality, powerful storytelling and inclusive talent strategies for broader audiences. Presenters also will highlight strategies that foster resilience and promote psychological safety for those leading DEI work, including the critical importance of addressing burnout, value misalignment and creating a sense of community and connection to enhance belonging. Driving results strengthens the defense against the anti-DEI narrative. DEI practitioners must demonstrate the impact of DEI initiatives on broader business outcomes, moving beyond representation metrics to include engagement, retention and other relevant metrics. All executives will be challenged to reimagine the future of DEI. How can we be more proactive? How can we make DEI the cornerstone of business and technological success? What is the bottom line? Ultimately, a large part of sustaining cultures of inclusion lies in cultivating powerful, committed change agents with the courage to act.
