Leadership
Strong physician leaders are critical to healthcare organizations, and forward-thinking leaders are keen to build a strong physician leadership pipeline. That's appealing to physicians, who are increasingly interested in leadership and executive opportunities. We fall short when we fail to identify early-career physicians with high leadership potential and give them opportunities to develop their gifts throughout their careers. A structured approach that includes leadership assessments, a continuum of growth opportunities and a demonstrated career path with more frequent opportunities to step into leadership roles can prepare physicians for the challenges that lie ahead. This proactive approach to leadership development can also satisfy the career aspirations of physicians and create a more stable organization with better rates of provider engagement and retention.
This session will include new data that reveals the sentiments of physicians and healthcare administrators toward physicians leadership development strategies; how formal leadership development like MHA and MBA programs, combined with informal mentoring and leadership development, can positively influence early-career physician retention and serve to develop future physician executives; how we should be challenging the conventional wisdom about generational differences so that we identify physicians with leadership potential earlier; and why it's critical to build purposeful development opportunities for physicians that resonate with their values, ambitions and expectations so that we cultivate a robust and diverse workforce for the future with a leadership track for those who desire it.
