Strategy & Innovation
Tampa General Hospital, West Central Florida's only university-affiliated academic health system in partnership with USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, partnered with the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council to create an epicenter of life sciences in downtown Tampa. Inspired by renowned medical districts in the nation's greatest cities, Tampa now houses a growing hub of world-class clinical care, academics, research and biotechnology, anchored by one of the largest academic health institutions in the nation.
With the support of the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council, the Tampa Medical and Research District is scaling an inclusive ecosystem that is already attracting renowned clinicians and researchers, resulting in increased access to experts, cutting-edge research, education and technology for patients and students. In addition to transforming the health care landscape in Florida, upon completion, the total economic impact of the district will be $6.4 billion annually, including the creation of more than 41,500 jobs, approximately $4 billion in gross domestic product (GDP), and $798 million in federal, state and local fiscal revenues. The continued growth and development of the district is made possible by the unique strengths and contributions of each of the three primary collaborators—Tampa General Hospital, the University of South Florida/USF Health and the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council, as well as the strong academic relationship between Tampa General and USF.
This panel discussion explores how hospitals and health systems can partner with academic institutions, community leaders and stakeholders across sectors to drive innovation and meet the evolving needs of growing and changing populations in their communities.
