Leadership
The journey toward becoming a senior healthcare leader can pose unique challenges for many healthcare professionals due to nuanced stereotypes and biases in the workplace. Although stereotypes interfere or even act as barriers, they can also be leveraged and transformed into part of a competitive leadership skill set to amplify successful transitions into team management roles, a critical asset for young professionals pursuing steep leadership trajectories. This session will address strategies for early to mid-careerists to enhance their personal brand in professional settings and strengthen their own self-perception. Attendees will be able to immediately implement strategies to build executive presence involving positive framing, intentionality and building relationships.
Bryan Rivera, a manager of Case Management turned director of neuroscience, oncology and clinical research at Sutter Eden Medical Center, leveraged the power of personal branding during an administrative fellowship to make an upward move in operations. Bryan will draw from his perspective to moderate this program.
Brenda Wong is a nurse case manager turned assistant nurse manager of Continuity of Care at Kaiser Sacramento Medical Center. Brenda will describe how she learned how to decrease being goal obsessive, create firm boundaries and empower her direct reports to better receive compliments.
Grant Cho is an administrative fellow turned incoming manager of Enterprise Access at Sutter Health System Office. He will describe how this successful transition was a result of being proactive in reiterating his relevant strengths, realizing a unique take on imposter syndrome and knowing how to give grace while operating in a competitive space.
By the end of this session, attendees will understand how to perform a self-appraisal aimed at addressing blind spots to better navigate unconscious biases they may encounter. Attendees will be able apply these tools to their own career growth as potential managers, new managers or seasoned managers ready for their next move up.
